Tari to-tor is a name of traditional dancing which motion unite in one rhythm with the music (named Margondang) which is played using traditional music instrument such as gondang, flute, batak trumpet and so on.
Based on its history the To-tor dance played in a ceremony dealing with spirit, where the spirit is called and it pervades to the statues. Then the pervaded statues begin to move by themselves to dance. The dance include the motion of legs dan hands. There are so many kinds of To-tor dance. One of them is To-tor Pangurason (the cleaning dance). This dance is usually held on a big ceremony in order to clean from any possible disruption of other spirits. The other is To-tor Sipitu Cawan ( seven plates dance). This dance is usually held on a inaugural of a king, this dance is born from 7 princes of heaven who take a bath in a lake on the top of pusuk buhit mountain as well as a coming of piso sipitu sarung (seven knives).
To-tor nowday is not for Batak tribe anymore. But it is still assumed with the world of spirit, but it becomes an art because to-tor has become a culture in every activity of traditional Batak.
